A Meta-Analysis of Picture Exchange Communication System(PECS) for Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder

Abstract
This study conducted a meta-analysis of Korean and international single-subject studies that applied the Picture Exchange Communication System(PECS) for children with autism spectrum disorders(ASD). Research from 2010 to 2020 including four Korean articles and 16 international articles were selected. The research participants, effect size of PND and IRD, and quality of evidence were compared and analyzed on participants, dependent variable, settings, and PECS characteristics. Results indicated that Korean article confirmed that significantly fewer studies were conducted compared to international studies. Overall, Korean articles were moderately or very large effects, however, Internationl results had moderate or questionably effects. Additionally, both studies showed effective interventions for 2~6 years of age, females, and PECS acquisition. The Korean results revealed mostly effective interventions except for problem behavior. The International studies confirmed that the special classes and PECS first three phases showed the effective intervention. As for the quality of evidence, both studies exhibited a mostly strong or adequate quality of evidence. Nevertheless, the quality of evidence regarding the social validity and fidelity of independent variables were inadequate. Therefore, it is necessary to study PECS using various dependent variable, settings, and implementers for continued use. The study lends itself to the literature by confirming mediation fidelity that equally measures independent variables and social validity.
